About SCOPE

SCOPE is a formal partnership of local oncologists from Sutter Health, Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health, Sierra Hematology Oncology, and UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Organized under the leadership of Dr. Karen Kelly, SCOPE is the first regional collaboration of its kind to share patients and clinical resources with the goal of expanding access to Phase I clinical trials to patients within the greater Sacramento area.

Why Was SCOPE Created?

SCOPE was built on three fundamental principals:

  1. Sacramento oncologists WANT access to every treatment opportunity for their patients.

  2. Partnership is a powerful tool in combatting this complex disease.

  3. Now is a revolutionary time in drug development with numerous targeted agents, immune therapies and novel chemotherapies being evaluated.

Started in the spring of 2015, Sacramento oncologists came together to create SCOPE, or the Sacramento Citywide Oncology Phase I Program. The SCOPE committee, mission, values and tasks were designed to create a foundation of citywide involvement and joint governance.

  • The SCOPE committee consists of oncology liaisons from each partner institution and patient advocates.

  • The SCOPE committee operates under a formal charter, bylaws, voting rules, and operational standards.

  • SCOPE committee members continuously address and refine the Phase I study portfolio to meet the needs of the region’s diverse population.

  • SCOPE committee members are engaged in identifying and overcoming trial barriers through patient education and physician and community awareness.

How Does SCOPE Work?

  • All oncologists in the Sacramento region are SCOPE members.

  • SCOPE members promote and enroll patients to Phase I clinical trials.

  • SCOPE members are responsible for enhancing and maintaining the program.

  • All SCOPE members and clinical research staff receive weekly study portfolio updates.

  • SCOPE referred patients enrolled in a clinical trial are jointly managed by UC Davis Phase I physicians and their SCOPE member oncologist.

  • All study-related treatment is administered at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center in conjunction with the patient’s primary oncology care.
